PURPOSE OF THE PROVERBS OF SOLOMON

1 이스라엘 임금 다윗의 아들 솔로몬의 잠언.

1 The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

 

목적

2 이 잠언은 지혜와 교훈을 터득하고 예지의 말씀을 이해하며

2 That people may know wisdom and discipline, may understand intelligent sayings;

3 현철한 교훈과 정의와 공정과 정직을 얻게 하려는 것이다.

3 May receive instruction in wise conduct, in what is right, just and fair;

4 또한 어수룩한 이들에게 영리함을, 젊은이들에게 지식과 현명함을 베풀려는 것이니

4 That resourcefulness may be imparted to the naive, knowledge and discretion to the young.

5 지혜로운 이는 이것을 들어 견문을 더하고 슬기로운 이는 지도력을 얻으라.

5 The wise by hearing them will advance in learning, the intelligent will gain sound guidance,

6 그러면 잠언과 비유, 현인들의 말씀과 수수께끼를 이해하게 될 것이다.

6 To comprehend proverb and byword, the words of the wise and their riddles.

7 주님을 경외함은 지식의 근원이다. 그러나 미련한 자들은 지혜와 교훈을 업신여긴다.

7 Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.

 

부모의 교훈을 들어라

THE PATH OF THE WICKED: GREED AND VIOLENCE

8 내 아들아, 아버지의 교훈을 들어라. 어머니의 가르침을 저버리지 마라.

8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching;

9 그것들은 네 머리에 우아한 화관이며 네 목에 목걸이다.

9 A graceful diadem will they be for your head; a pendant for your neck.

 

나쁜 친구들을 조심하여라

10 내 아들아, 죄인들이 너를 유혹하여도 따라가지 마라.

10 My son, should sinners entice you,

11 그들은 이렇게 말할 것이다. “우리와 함께 가자! 숨어서 남을 기다렸다가 그 피를 쏟고 매복하였다가 이유를 찾지 말고 죄 없는 이를 덮치자.

11 do not go if they say, “Come along with us! Let us lie in wait for blood, unprovoked, let us trap the innocent;

12 저승처럼 그들을 산 채로 집어삼키자. 구렁으로 내려가는 이들을 삼키듯 통째로 삼켜 버리자.

12 Let us swallow them alive, like Sheol, whole, like those who go down to the pit!

13 우리는 온갖 값진 재물을 찾아내어 우리 집을 약탈물로 그득 채우게 될 것이다.

13 All kinds of precious wealth shall we gain, we shall fill our houses with booty;

14 너도 우리와 함께 제비를 뽑고 돈 자루는 우리 모두 하나만 두자.”

14 Cast in your lot with us, we shall all have one purse!”

15 내 아들아, 그들이 이렇게 말할지라도 그들과 함께 길을 가지 마라. 그들의 행로에 발을 들여놓지 마라.

15 My son, do not walk in the way with them, hold back your foot from their path!

16 그들의 발은 악을 저지르러 줄달음치고 남의 피를 쏟으려고 서두른다.

16 [For their feet run to evil, they hasten to shed blood.]

17 무슨 날짐승이든 그 눈앞에서 그물을 치는 것은 헛된 일이건만

17 In vain a net is spread right under the eyes of any bird―

18 그들은 제 피를 쏟으려고 숨어서 기다리고 제 목숨을 잃으려고 매복하는 꼴이다.

18 They lie in wait for their own blood, they set a trap for their own lives.

19 부정한 이득을 뒤쫓는 자의 길은 다 이러하니 그 이득이 그들의 목숨을 앗아 가 버린다.

19 This is the way of everyone greedy for loot: it takes away their lives.

 

지혜의 간절한 호소

WISDOM IN PERSON GIVES A WARNING

20 지혜가 바깥에서 외치고 광장에서 목소리를 높인다.

20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the open squares she raises her voice;

21 법석대는 거리 모퉁이에서 소리치고 성문 어귀에서 말을 한다.

21 Down the crowded ways she calls out, at the city gates she utters her words:

22 “어리석은 자들아, 언제까지 어리석음을 사랑하려느냐? 언제까지 빈정꾼들은 빈정대기를 좋아하고 우둔한 자들은 지식을 미워하려는가?

22 “How long, you naive ones, will you love naivete,

23 내 훈계를 들으러 돌아오너라. 그러면 너희에게 내 영을 부어 주어 내 말을 알아듣게 해 주리라.

23 How long will you turn away at my reproof? [The arrogant delight in their arrogance, and fools hate knowledge.] Lo! I will pour out to you my spirit, I will acquaint you with my words:

24 내가 불렀건만 너희는 들으려 하지 않고 손을 내밀었건만 아무도 아랑곳하지 않았기에

24 ‘Because I called and you refused, extended my hand and no one took notice;

25 나의 모든 충고를 저버리고 나의 훈계를 원하지 않았기에

25 Because you disdained all my counsel, and my reproof you ignored―

26 나도 너희가 불행할 때 웃고 파멸을 당할 때 비웃으리라.

26 I, in my turn, will laugh at your doom; will mock when terror overtakes you;

27 파멸이 너희에게 폭풍처럼 닥치고 불운이 너희에게 태풍처럼 들이치며 곤경과 재앙이 너희 위로 닥칠 때 나는 그렇게 하리라.

27 When terror comes upon you like a storm, and your doom approaches like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish befall you.’

28 그때 그들이 나를 불러도 대답하지 않으리라. 그들이 나를 찾아도 찾아내지 못하리라.

28 Then they will call me, but I will not answer; they will seek me, but will not find me,

29 그들이 지식을 미워하고 주님을 경외하려 하지 않았기에

29 Because they hated knowledge, and the fear of the LORD they did not choose.

30 나의 충고를 원하지 않고 나의 모든 훈계를 업신여겼기에

30 They ignored my counsel, they spurned all my reproof;

31 그들은 제 행실의 열매를 먹고 자기들이 꾸며 낸 것으로 배부르리라.

31 Well, then, they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and with their own devices be glutted.

32 어리석은 자들의 배반은 자신을 죽음으로 이끌고 우둔한 자들의 방심은 자신을 파멸시킨다.

32 For the straying of the naive kills them, the smugness of fools destroys them.

33 그러나 내 말을 듣는 이는 편안히 살고 불행해질 걱정 없이 평온히 지내리라.”

33 But whoever obeys me dwells in security, in peace, without fear of harm.”
